"LES TRACES HABILES", WINNER OF THE thought award

The association Les Traces Habiles has won the 2nd edition of the Prix La Pensée (Thought Award) for its future publication La Consigne – les dessins des métiers d’art.

Profile of the winner

Established in 2011, the association Les Traces Habiles aims to explore and promote the richness of creative processes by compiling an original and unprecedented collection of drawings and sketches by various artists (architects, designers, writers, musicians, dancers, stage designers, cooks, scientists, etc.). The 150 professionals who have joined the association have helped it to amass a collection of 400 original drawings to date.

Preliminary sketches, exploratory designs, behind-the-scenes or fringe productions, these drawings offer a unique insight into creative thought. An act that is incarnate by its very nature, manual drawing recreates the artist’s inspiration and, sometimes, the new directions followed by their work. In order to share its research and collection with a wider audience, Les Traces Habiles produces publications and limited editions, organises exhibitions and runs an annual competition for students.

The publication

La Consigne – les dessins des métiers d’art was devised to follow up the work initiated by Les Traces Habiles at the Révélations fair in 2015.

Containing an original, unprecedented collection of some 260 sketches and drawings by 50 artists – from ceramists to glass artists, paper sculptors to jewellery designers, copper artists to textile designers, and many more besides – who transform raw materials in their workshops, the publication reveals the extraordinary richness of the creative processes at work in the fine craft sector. A true anthology, it combines inspirational sketches and technical drawings, along with texts written by the artists about their drawing techniques and careers.

This collection was published by Les Éditions Ateliers d’Art de France, a new publishing house opened by Ateliers d’Art de France in 2016 to help compile and disseminate the knowledge and ideas of the craft professions.

At the initiative of Les Traces Habiles and thanks to the support of the Thought Prize of the Ateliers d’Art de France Foundation, the publication was unveiled to the public for the first time on 4 May, during the Révélations biennial at the Grand Palais.
